VISIE, IDENTITEIT EN UITZICHT VOOR DE 21ste EEUW
ATS JONGEREN SYMPOSIUM & BIJEENKOMST 2009
Op een getrouwe manier de betekenis van het leven ondervinden. Dat is de rode draad in de thema’s waaraan ATS in de jongerensymposia gedurende de komende jaren aandacht wil besteden. Het aanstaande symposium in september zal vanuit een Bijbels perspectief de complexiteit behandelen die we dagelijks in onze (post)moderne wereld aan den lijve ondervinden: een diversiteit van meningen over van alles dat vaak in schril contrast staat met onze zoektocht naar en definitie van een eigen identiteit. Hoe verhoudt de culturele diversiteit en culturele relativiteit zich met betrekking tot een Bijbels wereldbeeld? Zoals je je kunt voorstellen laat deze vraag zich niet eenvoudig beantwoorden.
De keuze voor dit specifieke onderwerp komt voort uit een discussie met dr. Karl Wilcox tijdens de bijeenkomst van het ATS Jongerensymposium 2008. Er werd besproken hoe om te gaan met secularisatie te midden van de verscheidenheid van culturen en meningen. Hoe te kiezen voor (en te werken vanuit) de juiste en Bijbels gefundeerde ideeën? Niet zozeer in de context van de christen die in contact staat met een seculiere wereld, maar juist binnen de eigen kerk. De verschillende opvattingen over onderwerpen zoals de aard van de zonde, muziek in de kerk, seksualiteit en huwelijk, etc. kunnen het moeilijk maken om een eigen weg te vinden. Wie te geloven, wie te vertrouwen, hoe niet verstrikt te raken in politieke spelletjes, hoe nuchter en spiritueel gericht te blijven, zoekende naar de identiteit: hoe Christus in het leven centraal te houden?
De aandacht zal niet liggen op het presenteren van de Bijbelse perspectieven op de eerder genoemde onderwerpen als muziek, seksualiteit, moraal, etc. Veel te vaak richten we ons op wat te geloven (de dogma’s) en niet zozeer op de vraag hoe tot geloof te komen (de methode). Daarom zal in dit weekend de ontwikkeling van methoden centraal staan die ons individueel helpen om in de wereld van meningen Jezus als onze persoonlijke Verlosser te vinden, zodat wij instaat zijn om af te wijzen, te kiezen en betekenisvol te leven.
DATUM: 26 & 27 september 2009
Het ATS Jongerensymposium zal plaatsvinden op 26 en 27 september 2009 en richt zich primair op de jongere Adventisten. Iedereen is uiteraard welkom deel te nemen aan dit symposium. Om dr. Larry Lichtenwalter de gelegenheid te geven zich te richten op kwesties waar met name jongeren mee worden geconfronteerd, verwelkomen wij op de zondag graag Adventisten tot de leeftijd van 35 jaar. Zoals in het voorgaande jaar zal de zondag in het teken staan van persoonlijke vragen en open discussie.

SPREKER: LARRY LICHTENWALTER
U kunt zich voorstellen dat het moeilijk is een spreker te vinden die bekwaam is dit thema te behandelen. Wij zijn blij dr. Larry Lichtenwalter bereid te hebben gevonden.
Dr. Larry L. Lichtenwalter is predikant, auteur en adjunct professor aan de Theologische Seminarie van de Andrews University (USA). Hij is in bezit van een doctorsgraad in de Christelijke Ethiek en sinds 1985 hoofdpredikant van de ZDA Village Church in Berrien Springs, Michigan (USA). Larry Lichtenwalter is betrokken bij theologisch onderwijs op een internationaal niveau betreffend een verscheidenheid aan onderwerpen zoals christelijke leiderschap, Adventistische identiteit, geestelijke en persoonlijke ethiek, ethiek en theologie in het boek Openbaring, kerk en maatschappij. Momenteel werkt hij aan een boek over de morele thema's van Openbaring. Hij is auteur van diverse boeken, waaronder Well Driven Nails (ethiek en inspiratie uit het bijbelse boek Prediker) en Behind the Seen (ethiek en eschatologie in het bijbelse boek Esther). Enkele van zijn gepubliceerde artikelen zijn “Generation Angst and the Ethical Paradox of Postmodernity“, “Creation and Apocalypse”, “Spirit and Apocalypse”, “Living Under the Word: The Pragmatic Task of Moral Vision, Formation, and Action” en “Exodus Themes in Revel”. Zijn laatste boek “Revelation’s Great Love Story: More Than I Ever Imagined” is de eerste in een reeks van meerdere delen over praktische levensstijl gebaseerd op het boek Openbaring.
Hij kent het boek Openbaring uit zijn hoofd en daagt zijn luisteraars met zowel de hoop als ook de ethiek van dit laatste boek van de bijbel uit. Larry Lichtenwalter is Algemene Vice-voorzitter van de Adventist Theological Society (ATS), verder is hij lid van de Evangelical Theological Society (ETS) en de Society for Biblical Literature (SBL). Hij en zijn vrouw Kathie hebben vijf zonen en wonen in Berrien Springs, Michigan (USA).
In september zal dr. Larry Lichtenwalter laten zien hoe de onderlinge verhoudingen tussen wereldbeeld, cultuur en identiteit benaderd kunnen worden vanuit Bijbels perspectief. Hij zal vanuit het perspectief van Openbaring 12-14 laten zien welke gevolgen ons wereldbeeld heeft op onze rede en spiritualiteit. Het onderzoeken van onderwerpen als een Bijbels begrip van God, de oorsprong, de menselijke aard, de zonde en zin van het leven zal ons in staat stellen om ons weg te vinden in de (post)moderne ons omringende diversiteit van meningen.
Zoals door dr. Larry Lichtenwalter zelf geformuleerd is zijn belangrijkste doelstelling: ‘I want this series to be informative and inspirational – life transforming’.

Upcoming Event: ATS Jongeren Symposium 2009
The Topic:
As ATS-NL we have set an agenda of issues that we want to address within the next years. Many of them are crucial as they help us to find a faithful way of meaningful living and thinking in our days. For this upcoming Youth-Symposium in September (26.-27.9.) we want to tackle a complex phenomenon from a biblical perspective. Although complex, we encounter it in every day of our (post)modern world: diversity of opinions on about anything stands often in stark contrast with our own search for and defense of identity. How does cultural diversity and cultural relativity relate to a biblical worldview? You can imagine: there is no simple answer to this question.
The choice for this topic is very much inspired by the Sunday gathering of last Years ATS Youth-Symposium. Back then we were quite honestly debating with Dr. Karl Wilcox about challenges we meet within and without the church on the matter of secularism and the diversity of cultures and opinions. The wish was expressed to spent a weekend on the topic of how to decide and choose for (and develop!) good and biblical ideas within a world of many and contrasting opinions about anything. This question is not just a question that origins from the contact of a Christian with the world, no it arise very much from the experience within the church as well. Different opinions are handled about the nature of sin, music in church, sexuality and marriage, mission strategies, … making it difficult to find one's own way. Whom to believe, whom to trust, how not to become part of a political game, how remain sober and spiritually focused – how to find identity and perspective within these days: How to live and chose with Christ today?
Our focus on this weekend will not be to present biblical perspectives on all the diversely debated issues like music, sexuality, morals, etc. Too often our focus is on what to believe (dogma) rather than on how to come to believe (method). Therefore we will develop tools that will help us individually to explore faithfully the world of opinions and finding Jesus as our personal Saviour, so that we are able to discard, choose and live meaningful.
The Speaker
As you can imagine it is difficult to find a speaker who is willing and capable of addressing this topic! We are glad to have found one: Dr. Larry Lichtenwalter. Larry is minister of the Village Church in Berrien Springs and is adjunct professor at the Andrews University Seminary. He has earned is PhD degree on the topic of eschatology and the ethics of the 21st century. As an expert he gives different courses at the AU seminary within the field of ethics and interpretation.
In September Larry will show how the interrelation between worldview, culture and identity can be seen from a biblical perspective. He will use revelation chapter 12-14 as a backdrop against these issues. Larry will show what impact a worldview has on how we reason and live out our spirituality. By unfolding a biblical understanding of God, origins, human nature, sin and the meaning of life, Larry will draw conclusions on the matter of diversity of opinions in a global (post)modern world.
When I asked Larry what his main aim for his lectures will be he said “I want this series to be informative and inspirational--life transforming” (quote).
You see, the topic will again be exciting, personal and helpful for finding our way as Christians in this complex world.
The Time: 26 & 27 september 2009
The ATS Youth symposium will be on the 26th-27th of September. The ATS youth symposium does welcome especially young Adventists and their friends but every body is welcome to join this inspiring event. But on the Sunday meeting we would like to welcome only young Adventists until the age of 35. This will allow Larry to address especially the issues younger people are confronted with. Like last year the Sunday meeting will be much more personal allowing for personal questions and discussions with Larry and other young people. A chance to build up friendships and faith! We will also try to have one meal together as last year’s feedback on this was very positive.
